Stairs lead down to an underground bunker, built during the first years of the Second World War as the
backup Cabinet War Room. If bombing became too extensive in Whitehall, the cabinet would’ve
moved to this underground citadel, to plan further action and defence of the UK during World War Two.
Back in the days of the surface building, these stairs would've probably been hidden from view. The black and
white picture below shows the interior of this now demolished building.
However, the bunker still survived intact from its war years - largely unused during the war, and largely
unused by the Post Office in the years afterwards.
