In 1898, the LCC started work on a community for epileptic men, with William C Clifford Smith (fresh
from building the Manor Hospital) drawing up the plans.
St. Ebba’s is a small colony of villas, Admin Block, kitchens and boiler house. The emphasis was on a small
community, and the buildings are small, built to a domestic scale.
After visiting the huge asylums of the late 1880s, St. Ebba’s is reminiscent of a scaled down asylum, almost
like child asylum which would one day grow into a larger one!
The hospital is still in use, although some parts are derelict. Patients walk around on site, and so, for the time
being, I’m not considering this location for urban exploration. No pictures were taken.
Left: The plain water tower at Horton. G T Hine certainly built them cheap.
