We moved downstairs and struck out towards the core of the hospital having got tired
of the endless wards and doors. The first evidence of fire damage started appearing,
with ceilings gone, and charred joists and ceiling tiles scattered on the floor below.
This room was completely burnt out and subsequently cleared. In time, grass and scrubs
would find a way in, and nature would return.
Until then, a wag put a “Caution: Cleaning In Progress” sign in there. The juxtapositions
in derelict buildings are often unexpected and often amusing.
