Again, I couldn’t believe how clustered Hine’s ward designs were -
as they folded in on each other to form courtyards, they appeared to gain height,
topped off with this strange small room.
It looked a little like an observation point.
But this wasn't part of Hine's original plan - and no doubt he'd have been confused, and a little angry, at these
jutting extensions.
It turns out that these are lift shafts - there are six dotted around the hospital.
