The Radial Building was designed by the celebrated architect John Foulston.
His radiating ward planform was almost universally disliked, reflecting principles of control and observation
rather than care and treatment. (Amazingly architect Charles Fowler in the neighbouring county
attempted to "fix" the inherent problems with the radiating ward plan for the Devonshire County Asylum.)
