Whilst the impressive red brick boiler house chimney marked the location of the boiler house, there was no corresponding water tower. The hospital's designers came up with a novel alternative: a water tank was built into the side of the hill along Barn Lane. At over half a mile away from the hospital, and at its elevated height buried in the hillside, it provided enough pressure without the added expense of a water tower.
