The wards (Allen Ward for the males and Newlyn Ward for the females) were almost square shaped. Whilst this didn't seem to follow the new Nightingale ideas of ward ventilation (which was gaining credence in the 1860s), separate sanitation towers were built on each side of the wards (which was advocated by Nightingale).
