These buildings lacked colour being built from the local granite with a dark
slate roof. However, carvings, stone decoration and large windows lifted the
building's grandeur, reflecting its status as a paying patients' ward, built
by private money and not subject to the Commissionaires Of Lunacy's
rules of building decoration and embellishment.
