Early asylums were built as highly centralised blocks, heavily influenced by the prison architecture at
the time. As the decades passed, the classifications moved from the various ad-hoc designs, through the
corridor layout, radiating pavilions, through to the broad and narrow arrow echelon asylums, ending up with a
loosely connected village of villas.
