A radial ward design was attempted, but suffered problems when the wards met towards the centre of the
circle. In a novel, and unique design, C H Howell staggered the wards at
Cane Hill, but still ended up with
light and airing problems, and some wards had to straggle the central corridor. Far from ideal, but it was far
better than the endless corridor asylums.
