Oh yes, it was definitely very doomy. And very gloomy.

It was built to house 250 patients but was quickly realised within five years that its size was inadequate, as 300 patients were there in 1858, and 680 could be accomodated by 1889. The language of the time was caring and symphetic: patients were called 'visitors'.
