Galton was a member of the Lunar Society, the elite of the local society, who met by the light of the full moon (hence their name). Such luminaries joining discussions about science, politics, philosophy and others were James Watt, Dr Erasmus Darwin (founder of the society and grandfather of Charles), Josepth Priestly and Josiah Wedgwood. They are widely regarded as the forefathers of the industrial revolution, and of all their meeting places, favoured Great Barr Hall the most.
