This wasn’t some photograph dryer as we’d originally thought.

This was the air filteration system. As air was sucked through the slatted windows outside, it was forced through these filter bags to capture dust, insects, stray birds, small children and the like. The cages stopped the filter bags from ripping out of their mountings.

There must have been a big fan installed in this plant room at some point.

2008: This new view shows the extent of one of the plant rooms. The scaffolding has now all been removed.
